Fun games to play for a Groundhog Day celebration
|
|
|
Groundhog Toss
Paint a large cardboard box to look like a mound of dirt with grass
around it. Cut 3 - 4 holes in
the top of the box. Make several brown bean bags or use
small stuffed animals that look like Groundhogs. Set the box about 4 feet from where the children
will be standing and place a piece of tape on the floor so they will
know where to stand during the game. One by one children get
3 tries to toss the "groundhogs" into the holes.

Capture the Groundhog Tag
To play you will need a stuffed animal that looks
like a groundhog or a brown bandana. The object of the
game is to be the first one to grab the "groundhog" when your
number is called. Divide players into 2 equal groups and
assign each player a different number. One player on each
team must have the same number. Teams line up on opposite
sides and the "groundhog" is placed in the middle. At
random times the "caller" calls out a number. The players
that have been assigned that number both run to the middle and
try to grab the "groundhog". The player who grabs the
"groundhog" first gets a point for their team.
** For large groups divide into 4 equal groups and have players
line up facing each other like the four sides of a square.

Shadow Tag
Shadow tag is played like regular tag except to tag someone you must
step on their shadow. When the person who is "it" tags someone's
shadow then the person they tag becomes "it".
Groundhog Day Scavenger Hunt
Have a fun Scavenger Hunt around the neighborhood for Groundhog Day.
For this Scavenger hunt game players are divided into 2 teams. The
first team looks for items that are associated with winter and the
second team looks for items associated with Spring. See who wins -
Winter or Spring!
Groundhog Day Treasure Hunt
Treasure hunts are always fun for children. There are several
different ways to set up a treasure hunt:
Searching for Groundhogs
- In this simple treasure hunt lots of "treasure"
(wrapped candy) is hidden around an
area (yard or room). The children search for the treasure
and get to keep what they find. To prepare buy lots of wrapped
candy and hide them. Give each child a paper
sack or container to hold their loot.
Groundhog's Treasure Den
- In this treasure hunt
clues are left for the children that will take them eventually to the
Groundhog's Treasure (a container full of candy, necklaces, rings etc.) that they
can share. You will need to prepare at least 15 clues (kids
will want as many as they can get!) that will lead the children from the
clue they are holding to the next clue. You can tell them directly
- "Go to the swing set to find your next clue" or indirectly -"where back
and forth is fun" or even make up clues that will rhyme.
It's easier to set up if you make all your clues first on a piece of
paper and then put them out in order - don't forget to number them!
Prizes -
A fun variation of the treasure hunt is to hide "groundhogs" that you
make out of brown construction paper throughout a room or yard.
Before the party buy several fun prizes and number them. On
the "groundhogs" write either C for candy or a number of one of the
prizes. When the children collect the groundhogs they can turn them in
for either candy or the prize that corresponds to the number they have.
Groundhog Walk
This is played like a Cake Walk. Cut out 20 large brown circles from
construction or stock paper and number them 1 - 20. Also cut small
pieces of paper and number them 1 - 20 then place them in a decorated
bag or container. Tape the large circles to the floor in a circle
shaped pattern. When the music plays the guests will walk around
the circle. When the music stops a number is pulled from the
bag/container and the person who is standing on that circle receives a
cupcake. Keep playing until the cupcakes are gone. It's fun
to have the cupcakes (or cookies) decorated like groundhogs.
